Summary: You have data! Now what do you do? Whether you analyze the data yourself, ask your IT person to do it for you or hire a contractor to do it, you need to have a fundamental understanding of statistics to avoid “Garbage in, Garbage out” syndrome. In this session, we will review the statistical methods that are most frequently used including:
– Basic concepts you need to know (What is alpha, significance, power, error rate, generalizability and other confusing terms?)
– How to describe your data (Descriptive Statistics: Frequencies, crosstabs, means, standard deviations, etc.)
– How to compare groups (t-tests, ANOVA)
– How to look at associations between variables (Tests of association: chi-square, correlation)
– Tracking trends
Bio: Kimberly S. Maier, Ph.D. is an assistant professor of Measurement & Quantitative Methods and affiliate of the Educational Policy program in the College of Education at Michigan State University. Dr. Maier’s research focuses on the development of statistical models for complex data structures. She has conducted workshops on topics such as basic statistics, multilevel models, group randomized trials, and item response theory for universities, national associations, and research groups for more than ten years.
